Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
