In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant blasts shaking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately offer further details.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Developments
The incident occurs against a background of severely escalated strains in the region. Major developments leading up to this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant build-up of American warships in the Middle East, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of more discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. They rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
These developments remains fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
