The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
