A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.
